Quest for the Cup

For Canadians, hockey is more than just a sport. Hockey is a game that uniquely ties into our national tapestry. From East to West, Canadians across the country cherish the opportunity to witness hockey at all levels: from the pick-up game on the outdoor rink to the NHL showdowns held at huge arenas. The electricity could be felt across the country when Sidney Crosby scored the winning goal in the finals of the 2010 Olympics. Indeed, hockey is a part of our national identity: It’s featured on our currency, after all!

And while our Olympic hockey teams both reign supreme, our NHL teams have fared far worse in the past two decades. In fact, the last time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup, it was in 1993 when the Montreal Canadians triumphed over the Los Angeles Kings. To put it in perspective: this was the year that Brian Mulroney resigned as Prime Minister and was replaced by Kim Campbell, the year that Jurassic Park, Mrs. Doubtfire and Schindler’s List were box-office smashes, and the year that I was jamming to Ace of Base’s “All that she wants” on my walkman. Needless to say, it’s been a LONG time since the Stanley Cup has been in Canada

Finally, we Canadians have a fresh chance at taking home the elusive cup. The Vancouver Canucks have had an amazing year, finishing first overall during the regular season. A team that’s known for its speed, its skill, and its goaltending, the Canucks have made it to the final round of the NHL playoffs, going up against the Boston Bruins! It promises to be an interesting series, with the Canuck’s currently leading 1-0.

Even if you aren’t a hardcore hockey fan, take the opportunity to incorporate the final series into your social calendar! Personally, I think there is nothing better than gathering a group of friends at a local pub to watch this type of game. The stakes are high, the energy is electric, and you’re guaranteed a good time. Besides, there’s nothing more Canadian than good friends, beer and hockey…in a nutshell.
